Blog #2: Chapter 2- Developing a Connected Learning Model

A small section of chapter two explains that having a common language is important. "Many of the words and expressions used to describe learning in connected, open spaces are overused, used incorrectly, or used interchangeably," is the first line on page 29. The writings and teachings will never be able to reach the students if they aren't on the same page. In other words, the teachers and students will have to break the language barrier. Just like I have mentioned before, dance was a big part of becoming who I am now. The language barrier was still an obstacle to overcome. Recently, I watched a video of two people from two different countries trying to choreograph a dance despite not being able to speak the same language. It's a good watch if you have the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O19HV8Yspr0
It's normal to encounter these things no matter what field you are in. I once worked at a physical therapy clinic and there have been many instances where I find the occupational therapist backing up her words with her body language when explaining/teaching something to her patient.
Another portion that I found particularly interesting was the need for diversity on page 41. "The important of diversity is foundational for organizations and individuals wanting to reculture, transform, or totally reinvent themselves in order to remain relevant in students' lives." Diversity affects school, work, and other aspects of our life in many ways. We all come from different backgrounds and it is because of that that we all have different experiences to share. It is from hearing these experiences that we all learn and grow from them. We evolve.

I also think body language is very important. To me you can figure out if someone is happy, upset, or angry just by there body language. Wanting to be a PA after graduating college I understand that I will have to show the patient how to do some things after speaking with them. In one of my classes now I am learning all about the body and how the muscles work and my professor does the same thing. She backs up her words with body language to make it more understandable.
ReplyDeleteI like how you emphasized that body language is a big part of communicating. While some people may not understand your words they might get what you're trying to explain with your body language. However, this becomes a problem when we try to communicate in an online learning community. For instance, in our class we might not understand what is being asked to do, that's why it's important to explain ourselves and even try to give examples to emphasize our topic.
ReplyDeleteThe discussion of body language is very important to think about when it comes to communicating. In any profession one has, they are going to interact with a language barrier at some point. From personal experience, working in customer service has forced me to face different barriers. One of the most common ones I face is interacting with deaf people. Since I do not know sign language, I am often times speaking slowly because many people can read lips. I make it a point to have a positive body language to emphasize that the conversation being held is positive. But Natasha makes a good point that body language is not involved with online communication.
ReplyDeleteI think adding in body language was a good point. You can really feel out a persons emotion for something based on their body language. I also agree with your view on diversity. It does affect us in all aspects in life, not just our professional careers. Diversity not only helps you grow as a person, but can also help the people around you learn for your experiences.
ReplyDeleteI really like the pictures you have chosen. I do agree that we have to break language barriers in order to learn and understand each other. I do believe that diversity is a good thing. It is really good to learn from other people's hardships. Instead of being surrounded by the same people, it is good to have a mixture of different cultures and ethnicity.
